The role of family support in cocaine addiction recovery

The role of family support in cocaine addiction recovery

We understand how difficult it can be to see someone changing due to addiction. The best thing that you can do is be there for them and encourage them to get the help they need. In this blog, we’re going to be looking at the role of family support in addiction recovery.

What happens during addiction recovery?

When your loved one begins their recovery journey, they will need to choose a rehab clinic. This is a very important step, as choosing the wrong place can make recovery harder.

We offer support for cocaine addiction at our Bolton rehab centre, and we have been rated ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC. We have helped hundreds of clients learn helpful techniques to overcome their addiction and manage their triggers.

When your loved one attends our rehab centre, they will have support 24/7. Our private and comfortable accommodation offers an urban recovery model that helps clients integrate into the community during substance abuse treatment and recovery.

To treat addiction effectively, Acquiesce offers a combination package which includes the 12 steps, cognitive behavioural therapy approaches, counselling and holistic approaches such as yoga, meditation, acupuncture and physical exercise.

Our 12-step model focuses on spiritual and emotional healing, accountability and peer support. In combination, these methods complement each other excellently.

You can rest assured that your loved one is in safe hands when you choose Acquiesce for drug addiction treatment. Find out more about our rehab facility.

What is the role of family in cocaine addiction recovery?

Family is often one of the most important parties when it comes to rehab. It’s often family members who encourage their loved one to get support as they see the effects it’s having firsthand.

Having a supportive family is a great way for people in rehab to find hope in their recovery from drug and alcohol use.

We offer family support, including family psychoeducation and update calls, while your loved one is in rehab. We believe that taking these steps helps to improve the efficiency of treatment. Family involvement helps people to maintain sobriety after treatment programs.

There are so many benefits of family support, including allowing you to gain clarity and get a better understanding of substance use disorders and what your loved one is going through.

What are the signs to look out for?

Cocaine and other substances can quickly take over someone’s life, so it’s important to know the signs and be able to spot them promptly.

  • Regular colds, congestion or nosebleeds
  • Hyperactivity
  • Agitation
  • Difficulty with concentrating or focusing
  • Insomnia, trouble sleeping
  • Struggling with daily functions, such as going to work

Cocaine can also change brain chemistry over time, which means some people may show symptoms of psychosis. A person’s mental health may be affected by drug use. Read our blog on what is coke jaw and why does it happen?

In addition to these symptoms, you may notice that the person becomes less interested in other aspects of their lives. They may also experience strained relationships, financial problems and poor performance at work.

Once an addiction has begun, it can be hard for a person to deal with it on their own. They may not be able to recognise that the cocaine is making things worse for them. This can lead to people using it as a coping mechanism. Alcohol is commonly used as a coping tool, and we also offer support for alcohol abuse.

How can a family provide addiction support?

It’s so important to have a calm and mature conversation with your loved one if you are worried about them. Here are some tips before you have the conversation.

  • Do some research into the addiction and learn how it can impact people’s lives (both the user and their close friends and family)
  • Create a safe space to discuss treatment options and gain insight into their struggles
  • Be honest and understanding
  • Build trust and show that you are actively listening
  • Respect their needs and privacy; they may not be ready to talk to you just yet
  • Seek support for yourself and other family members to ensure you have healthy boundaries and can support your loved one’s recovery process. This may include peer groups or online therapy.
  • Help the person to get professional help with drug use

Avoid using language that comes across as judgmental or critical. You also need to be careful that you aren’t enabling their behaviour towards cocaine.

Let them know that these things take time, but it’s better to start now before things get worse. Some family members might find it helpful to find family therapy support groups to help them throughout the treatment process. Read our blog on how rehab helps rebuild relationships.

What happens after rehab?

We have a 98% success rate when it comes to effective addiction treatment. This is much higher than the national average of between 60 and 70%.

When our clients leave rehab, we don’t just forget about them, we offer fantastic aftercare support to help them navigate this new way of life and ensure they continue meeting their treatment goals.

During the last seven days of treatment at Acquiesce, we take time to plan the person’s life after treatment by focusing on recovery outcomes. We also keep in contact with them through regular phone calls for three months after they leave the treatment centre. This helps to ensure that everything is on track.

Even though we arrange these calls, our clients don’t need to wait for us. If they need us, they can give us a call whenever they need, and we’ll be there to offer helpful guidance and support. Read our blog on finding the right rehab centre.

We also have a member’s area, which is exclusive to clients who complete their recovery journey with us. This platform offers a place to connect with others, share your wins and challenges and celebrate everything that comes with recovery.

We also have weekly online calls within the area, which help to keep clients on track and reduce the risks of a substance abuse relapse. Read our blog on why aftercare is just as important as rehab.

We are passionate about helping people overcome addiction and live happier and healthier lives. We know how hard it can be to see the consequences of a loved one’s addiction, but our caring and supportive team are here to help. Read our blog on personal stories of recovery from cocaine addiction.
