Why aftercare is just as important as rehab

Why aftercare is just as important as rehab

Aftercare is a vital part of the recovery process, regardless of why you attend rehab. In this blog, we explore why aftercare is just as important as rehab itself.

What is rehab?

Rehab is used to treat psychological dependence on drugs, alcohol or other substances. Some addictions can cause people to have both a psychological and a physical dependence. These people may need to attend a detox clinic to wean themselves off the substance more carefully.

For those living with psychological dependencies, there is often no requirement for a detox, as the body can physically cope without the substance.

It’s essential that you consult a professional to determine the best option for you. Removing the substance from your body with a physical dependency can be dangerous. For example, substances like alcohol, benzodiazepines, and some opioids often require medically supervised detox for safety.

Even without physical withdrawal symptoms, psychological dependence can be powerful and still requires structured treatment.

Your rehabilitation plan should be bespoke to you. It should combine 1-1 therapy, group therapy sessions and comprehensive support. Our rehab centre in Bolton is a private facility, meaning that you can access more specialist support and be surrounded by others who genuinely want to improve their lives during the recovery process. This supportive environment is crucial for drug or alcohol addiction recovery.

Our expert team works closely with clients to prepare them for life outside of rehab. We use a 12-step approach alongside CBT techniques to help clients understand their addiction and identify triggers more easily. Once you know these triggers, we begin working on strategies to help you manage them in the outside world. Read more about CBT for addiction.

Is rehab worth it?

Rehab can be highly effective when delivered by a qualified and supportive team. We have a professional and supportive team on hand to help you work through your addiction effectively, enabling you to live a happier and healthier life.

Acquiesce has achieved ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC and has an addiction recovery success rate of 98%, compared to the national average of around 60-70%.

When our clients have completed treatment and are ready to leave the rehab centre, we offer comprehensive aftercare support. Whether you’re dealing with substance abuse or need alcohol rehab, we offer tailored support and aftercare programmes to promote a positive recovery journey.

rehab and aftercare

Why is aftercare so important?

Aftercare refers to ongoing support after rehab, such as therapy, peer groups, check-ins with clinicians and relapse-prevention planning.

There are so many reasons why aftercare is so important, and many people overlook it. Without an aftercare plan in place, many people struggle to integrate back into their lives while utilising the new skills they have learned.

While rehab teaches these tools and techniques, aftercare provides individuals with the opportunity to apply them in real-life scenarios.

Relapse prevention

Relapse can happen, and while it can be challenging to manage, the most important thing to do is recognise it and identify why it might have happened. Relapse is most common in the first few months after a person receives treatment, which is why it’s important to have a plan in place.

Many people find themselves feeling overwhelmed and stressed, which can lead to them relapsing. By having processes in place to manage stress more effectively, we can reduce the risks of relapsing. We support all clients with a relapse prevention plan during addiction recovery.

Promotes continuous growth

Removing the addictive substance from your life is the first step of an incredible growth journey. Personal growth continues throughout aftercare, as individuals develop new insights and habits. It enables you to understand yourself better and make other valuable changes to your everyday life.

Some people who experience substance use disorders also suffer from poor mental health. Ongoing therapy may be a good way to manage mental health conditions better.

Enables transition and structure

Making the transition from rehabilitation to aftercare can be daunting, but with the correct plans in place, it makes for a smoother transition. It enables you to take control of your responsibilities slowly, rather than dealing with them all at once.

It’s common to have check-ins with your rehab centre during aftercare. This enables you to gain structure and stay accountable, allowing you to continue reaching your goals.

Growing your network for lasting recovery

While you should still have the support of your rehab centre, it’s also a good idea to build your own support network. Many people choose to attend support group meetings where they can feel part of a community that genuinely understands what they have been through. This understanding promotes encouragement, which is great.

Our aftercare services

Our support doesn’t end when you leave rehab, and there are no extra charges associated with our aftercare support.

During the last seven days of addiction treatment, we begin working on a plan for you after rehab. Once you leave the centre, we remain in touch for three months. We understand that there are times when things may feel more on track than others. If you need us, you don’t need to wait for our call. You can call us any time during the recovery process.

Following addiction treatment, you will be invited to join our exclusive members’ area, which has been designed specifically for the people who have experienced the transformative journey of Acquiesce. The platform enables you to meet new people, share your experiences – the good and the more challenging, and celebrate recovery.

We also host a weekly Zoom meeting within this platform, enabling you to connect with others on a regular basis and promote long-term recovery.

Why is a social connection key to addiction recovery?

Building social connections is really important, and even more so when it comes to recovery. By interacting with people who share similar experiences, we can foster a sense of belonging, allowing us to maintain a more positive outlook.

We created our members’ area to enhance the aftercare experience and ensure that we can help our clients build lasting connections with others. This can also support people with rebuilding relationships following a rehabilitation programme.

We provide ongoing support for many addictions, including alcohol or drug addiction, gambling and more. Attending our residential rehab centre enables you to learn healthy habits, coping strategies and relapse prevention techniques to reduce addiction relapse.

Are you seeking trusted rehabilitation support? Then you should contact our friendly team. We will be more than happy to help.
